About

A Tranquil Heart was born out of my personal experience with depression & anxiety, and my desire to help others who struggle with these conditions. Specifically, the inspiration to start this blog came during a time when I was attempting to support a sister who was struggling with a depressive episode.   I could totally relate to her struggle, and I desperately wanted to help.  I began by reflecting on my own struggles with depression, and then writing down everything that I could recall that had once proven beneficial to me. Although I was compiling the list in order to help the sister, I soon realized that the process was also serving as a wellness reminder for myself.   Ironically, I had become somewhat neglectful of some of my own wellness practices, and in doing so, I was increasing the risk of experiencing my own future bout with depression. It occurred to me that my realization was probably not unique, and that other Muslims living with depression (and/or anxiety) would likely benefit from similar reminders.   This site is expressly for that purpose.

The articles I post here will be a combination of relevant research, lessons learned, and my personal experience navigating to a place of sustained wellness. Now, sharing my private struggles (in such a public way) is completely out of character for me, and miles outside of my comfort zone. However, I decided that if just one person benefits from me sharing my story and resources, then the discomfort in doing so is well worth it.  I believe that every struggle has a purpose. I also believe that our collective purpose is to serve the Creator by serving His creation. So A Tranquil Heart is both an effort of submission to the Creator, as well an exercise in compassion for fellow believers.

“What actions are most excellent? To gladden the heart of human beings, to feed the hungry, to help the afflicted, to lighten the sorrow of the sorrowful, and to remove the sufferings of the injured.” Prophet Muhammad (saw) -Bukhari
